In the MuziekOpleidersAkkoord (translation: Music Educators Agreement), all Dutch primary teacher training colleges (pabo’s) and conservatoires have agreed to work together to improve and secure the quality of music education in schools.
Knowledge development is an important part of the MuziekOpleidersAkkoord. Based on a plan analysis by the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie, several topics were identified as requiring further development: school placements and cooperation between pabo’s and conservatoires, subject integration, the music curriculum at pabo’s and conservatoires, and technology in music education. For each topic, a working group was formed, bringing together teacher educators from different universities of applied sciences.
Through Muzketier Producties, I was first involved in 2020 in organising a workshop on subject integration during the signing of the MuziekOpleidersAkkoord. Following this, I was also involved in the lesson design competition.

After a subsequent period, during which I worked via Muzketier Producties for Méér Muziek in de Klas to explore how this knowledge development could best be shaped, I served in 2021 and 2022 as coordinator – on behalf of ArtEZ Conservatorium Enschede – of a working group on subject integration. In this group, we discussed not only the underlying theories and how to further advance the topic, but also delivered workshops, including at the study days of the Netwerk Muziekdocenten Pabo’s and during the Working Conference at Noordeinde Palace. The results of this knowledge development have been shared internally and will be made publicly available during 2023 in the form of short knowledge clips.
In the working group on Music and Educational Learning Technology, I have mainly served as a sounding board, also on behalf of ArtEZ Conservatorium Enschede. At present, a train-the-trainer programme is being developed, which will be implemented in 2023.
