This month marks the start of the train-the-trainer course Contemporary Music Education with Technology. I developed this training together with Bert van Uffelen from Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, commissioned by the MuziekOpleidersAkkoord: a 12-year collaboration between all Dutch primary general teacher training institutions (pabo) and music conservatoires.
The course is aimed at music pedagogy trainers who not only want to learn how to apply technology-enhanced music education themselves, but also how to pass on this knowledge and these skills to their students or colleagues.
During the course, participants work on their competencies in didactics and technology within music education, and engage in (re)designing a part of their curriculum. This redesign is guided by a Design Guide (OntwerpWijzer) we developed, consisting of a number of design steps, each divided into topics with questions participants can ask themselves when developing applications of technology in their teaching.
This train-the-trainer course originated from a professional development need among music teacher educators at general teacher training institutions, which became clear following an exploratory study by the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie in preparation for the Professionalisation of Music Education in Pabo’s scheme. Subsequently, a working group of the MuziekOpleidersAkkoord explored ways in which music and educational/learning technology could be given a structural place in teacher training (both teacher training institutions and conservatoires).
