Together with European colleagues who are all music educators specialising in the use of technology in music education, I am co-authoring a chapter for the upcoming volume in the EAS (European Association for Music in Schools) book series.
The content of our chapter is based on the outcomes of the DigiTiME symposium, which we organised during the EAS conference in Lyon (May 2023).
DigiTiME is a so-called special focus group within EAS. Such a working group highlights a specific topic in music education. DigiTiME is dedicated to the role of digital technology in music education in schools.
During the DigiTiME symposium, two theoretical models were central: TPACK and TAM. These models provide insight into what is needed to successfully implement technology in education.
Together with my Swiss colleague, Wilfried Aigner, I explained these models and how they influence each other. Along with the other working group members, we briefly shared examples of how these models are applied or embedded within our universities and colleges.
As an example, I referred to the technology-enhanced music education learning pathway of the Bachelor of Music in Education at ArtEZ Conservatorium Enschede. In this programme, students develop TPACK (knowledge and skills relating to technology, education, music, and their intersections) and gain successful experiences that increase their acceptance of technology.
We then held group discussions with the symposium participants on several key questions related to TPACK and TAM – for example, how these models are recognised within their institutions and how they are already integrated into professional development and lifelong learning initiatives.
The chapter summarises the key outcomes of the symposium. My contribution includes, among other things, an explanation of TPACK and TAM. The chapter will also present examples of TPACK and TAM in relation to creativity, composition, improvisation, and professional development across different educational institutions.
Alongside our chapter, the EAS book will also feature chapters on other topics that were central during the Lyon conference. The exact topics of these other chapters are not yet known.
The EAS book will be launched during the EAS conference, which will take place from 12 to 15 June 2024 in Dublin, Ireland, and will be available from Helbling Publishers from that date.
