Just like in the past two years, on March 15, 2024, the European Association of Music in Schools (EAS) has organised the European Day of Music in Schools (EuDaMuS).
With EuDaMuS, music teachers, students, and other stakeholders from 24 countries across Europe highlight music in their education. This year, they showcase how music can make us both unique and united, the theme of this year: Unique and United!
Each country celebrated in its own way. In the Netherlands (VLS) and Belgium (Luca School of Arts), the professional association VLS for music teachers (The Netherlands) and Luca School of Arts (Belgium) jointly organised an online kick-off event for music teachers (on March 14). During this event, three speakers (Evert Bischop-Boele, Julia Koelmans, and Michiel Dehondt) shared different perspectives on repertoire choice in music education, exploring the question: Who actually chooses the music, the teacher, or the student?
Additionally, EuDaMuS was celebrated during an online European event, featuring singing, children’s drawings about music in their country, videos of folk songs performed by students.
After this third edition, on behalf of the EAS board, I have taken over the coordination of EuDaMuS from my Lithuanian colleague Ruta Girdzijauskiene, who initiated EuDaMuS.
