I’m involved with Art Camp mbo, a project initiated by the Méér Muziek in de Klas Foundation, focused on experiencing and sharing arts and culture among students from three vocational schools (mbo) and children in primary schools and childcare centers.
This pilot project consists of three parts. During Art Camp 1, a selected group of approximately 60 students (20 per vocational school) are immersed in various arts and culture workshops. They then collaborate with each other and professionals from the cultural sector to explore what needs to be done to organise an Art Camp event for their fellow students at their own vocational school. In the second part of this pilot, these 60 students organise this arts and culture event at their own vocational school for their fellow students. These fellow students are, in turn, challenged to organise and carry out an arts and culture activity with and for the children they supervise in childcare or primary school.
The first part of Art Camp mbo (Art Camp 1) took place on March 13, 2024, at Hedon in Zwolle. The event was graced by the honorary chairperson of the Méér Muziek in de Klas Foundation: Her Majesty Queen Máxima. She participated in a roundtable discussion with representatives from vocational schools, other educational institutions, and the cultural sector. Furthermore, she engaged in conversations with students from the three vocational schools.

I’m involved in this project to shape the program of the first part of Art Camp mbo and to advise and support in shaping the content of the second part of the project. For example, during Art Camp 1, I designed a speed dating and brainstorming program with teachers from the participating vocational schools, aimed at fostering connections between them, regional cultural providers, and preparing the students for their role as organizers of Art Camp 2.
Based on the feedback from teachers and students, it was a successful start to the pilot, which we plan to continue in the coming months at the participating vocational schools and hopefully expand to other vocational schools next year.
