A new academic year has begun. Time to look ahead at what I will be focusing on with Muzketier in the coming months.

Resources

This website will be filled with a range of educational resources designed to support music teachers and teacher educators in enriching their music education through the use of technology. Before the summer, you could already get started with a Bandlab Guide to quickly learn the basics of this free online DAW. Soon you will also find a guide here to help you get to know the basics of Live, Ableton’s professional DAW. More of these guides are in the making for other DAWs.

Before the summer I also developed and delivered a new AI awareness training – a workshop that invites teachers and teacher educators to reflect on assessment in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In this workshop you actively work with ChatGPT, gaining a clear understanding of the possibilities of this AI and the consequences it may have for the way we design assessments. In short: I get you thinking while also giving you practical tips for working with ChatGPT.

Research and innovation

As part of my PhD research, I have spent the past years developing interactive technology to strengthen the education of future music teachers, as takes place in teacher training colleges (pabo’s) and conservatoires. The focus has increasingly been on enhancing formative assessment, including real-time evaluation, in order to sharpen and optimise the feedback process in music teacher education. With the help of a Master’s student from the University of Twente, a web application was developed for this purpose, which I will continue to test in practice over the coming period. More information at eduFade.com.

For the foundation Méér Muziek in de Klas I will be involved in two projects: one aimed at further developing an online tool that helps primary teachers navigate portals with educational materials, and another aimed at creating a new variant of Art Camp MBO – a project that boosts arts education for children in primary schools and childcare, with a special focus on engaging students in vocational education (MBO).

Consultancy

For the Muziekopleidersakkoord – a collaboration between all teacher training colleges (pabo’s) and conservatoires (music teacher studies) in the Netherlands – I will be involved in setting up a professional learning community to promote the use of digital technology in Dutch music education. The first step will be a kick-off meeting on 8 October 2025 at Willem Twee Studios in Den Bosch. This professional learning community (PLC) builds on a train-the-trainer course that Bert van Uffelen (Hogeschool Rotterdam) and I developed and that focused on learning to apply technology in music education.

And there is more in the pipeline. But I will save that for another time…

For now …

If you would like advice on applying technology in your music teaching or your school’s music education, or if you are looking for a sparring partner in developing technology for music education, do get in touch. I’d like to hear from you!
