A new volume in the book series European Perspectives on Music Education of the European Association for Music in Schools (EAS) has been published recently, called:

Liberty – Equity – Creativity: Innovating and inventing Music in the Classroom (Buchborn et al., 2024).

Together with European colleagues, I co-authored the chapter From Sheet to Beat. Creativity and Composition as Useful Content for (Digital) Lifelong Learning (pp. 189-206), in which we discuss the outcomes of the DigiTiME symposium, at the EAS conference in Lyon (May 2023).

What the chapter is about

During the DigiTiME symposium, two theoretical models were central: TPACK and TAM. These models provide insight into what is required for the successful implement of technology in music education.

In the chapter, we explain these models and how they interact. We also share examples of how they are applied and embedded within our universities and colleges.

The chapter concludes that, despite the potential that composition, songwriting, creative practice and digital media offer for music education, both teachers and students still face fundamental challenges. Sustainable progress in technology-enhanced music education requires tailored programmes and flexibility in both organisation and mindset.
