Checklist: Preparing Technology Use in Music Lessons

If you want to enrich your lessons with technology, preparation is key. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything covered.

Checklist

All digital handouts, tutorials, or video guides are prepared.
All lesson resources (backing tracks, stems, worksheets, sample libraries, loops) are available for easy sharing.
All online resources and links are pre-selected, safe, and ready-to-use.
Export formats for student work (MP3, PDF) are defined and tested.
Backup copies of all teaching materials and lesson resources are stored offline.

All necessary (music) apps and software are installed on student and teacher devices.
All necessary (music) apps and software are updated to the latest version.
All licenses and subscriptions are valid and active.
Student user accounts or logins are created and tested.
Project templates in DAWs or notation software are created and tested for student use.

All required devices (computers, tablets, MIDI controllers, audio interfaces) are available.
All equipment is labelled for easy distribution and collection.
All devices are fully charged or connected to reliable power supplies.
All other cables, adapters, and connectors are tested and working.
Spare equipment (headphones, cables, splitters, adapters) is available.

Wi-Fi reliability and bandwidth are tested and sufficient for all devices.
Connectivity of MIDI devices, audio interfaces, and controllers is confirmed.
Speakers, monitors, or PA system are set up and tested at safe listening levels.
Headphone splitters or audio routing solutions are connected and working.
Seating and workstations are arranged to support collaboration, individual focus, or both.

Safe listening practices (monitoring/headphone levels) are ensured.
Equipment zones are checked and kept free of food and liquids.
Common technical issues (latency, login problems, sound routing errors) are anticipated, and solutions are prepared.
Offline alternatives for lesson activities are prepared in case of technical failure.
