General introduction
GarageBand for iOS/iPadOS is a touch-based music production app that turns an iPhone or iPad into a complete music creation environment.

GarageBand is an entry point into the Apple music making ecosystem. Its intended purpose is to enable users to create, record and arrange music quickly, without requiring prior technical knowledge.

Basic operation
Garageband for iOS is essentially a DAW on a mobile device, with something additional features built in. The app combines audio recording, loop-based composition and basic mixing tools with a range of virtual instruments, including, so-called, “Smart Instruments”. These instruments are played directly on the touchscreen, using gestures such as tapping, swiping or sliding, to mimic the playing techniques of the real-life musical instruments. For example, the guitars are played by strumming the strings with your thumb or fingers across chord strips, while the string ensembles come to live through bowing gestures for legato playing and tapping for pizzicato.

In Autoplay mode, tapping the chord strips triggers an automatic accompaniment in twelve variations per instrument (i.e., played simultaneously by one, two or three fingers per selection).
Similar to other DAWs, music is organised into tracks arranged along a timeline. Learners can record performances in real time, overdub new parts, and edit recordings by trimming, looping or rearranging regions. The piano roll editor allows basic MIDI editing, such as correcting timing and pitch or adjusting note length. In addition, GarageBand for iOS includes a range of instruments, sequencers, virtual amps and pedals, as well as many essential audio processors (e.g., EQ, compression) and effects (e.g., reverb, delay, bit crusher) to explore the fundamentals of mixing.

In addition to the track-based timeline (similar to Arrangement View in Ableton Live), Garageband for iOS also offers a Live Loops mode. This mode provides a grid-based clip launcher in which loops can be triggered and combined in real time (similar to Session View in Ableton Live). It supports improvisation, experimentation with musical structure, and live sound manipulation. To help you get started, GarageBand for iOS includes a sound library with loops and samples that can be dragged directly into a project. Finished pieces can be exported as audio files or shared with other apps and platforms, such as Logic Pro X — Apple’s professional DAW.
